July Happenings
July is shaping up to be a busy month.
First, many thanks to Steven G. Fullwood, librarian and archivist at the Schomburg Library in New York City; he moderated a very insightful panel on June 27, 2006 about black LGBT publishing. Panelists were Colin Robinson (Other Countries Collective member, former executive director of the New York State Black Gay Network), Charlene Cothran (publisher of Venus magazine) and yours truly, Lisa C. Moore.
On Thursday, July 13, 2006, 2-3:30 p.m., I'm participating in the plenary session of the 10th annual National Black Religious Summit on Sexuality, to be held at Howard University School of Divinity, 1400 Shepherd St. NE in Washington, DC. The session is called "Exodus of Hope: Sexual Orientation, Sexual Identity, and the Black Church."
On Friday, July 14, 2006, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Spirited co-editors G. Winston James and Lisa C. Moore will be reading and signing at the LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th St., room 312. New York City area contributors reading are: Alaric Wendell Blair, Mona de Vestel, Kenyon Farrow, Daniel Alexander Jones, Tawanna Sullivan, Linda Villarosa and Eva Yaa Asantewaa. This event is co-sponsored by Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD). Please come out and support--and buy a book!
Between July 15 and July 21, 2006, I'll be in Chicago to support my boo at the Gay Games.
On Saturday, July 15, 2006, at 4:30 p.m., Ernest Hardy, author of Blood Beats: Vol. 1, will moderate a panel titled "Rappin' 'Bout Homo Hop" at Barnsdall Gallery Theatre, 4800 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood, CA. Panelists include Alex Hinton (director, PICK UP THE MIC); Byron Hurt (director, BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES); Dutchboy (co-founder, Rainbow Flava, Phat Farm Records); Juba Kalamka (co-founder, Peace OUT, Rainbow Flava, Deep Dickollective); Katastrophe (mc, Winner of 2005 OutMusic Producer of the Year Award); Naya'Hri Suhalia (author, "Diversity Remixed: The Uprising of the LGBT Hip Hop Movement"); and QBoy (mc, member of U.K.s Pac-Man Team crew). This event is part of OutFest, the queer film festival in Los Angeles. Contact OutFest for ticket information.
On Friday, July 21, 2006, 7:30 p.m., Spirited co-editors G. Winston James and Lisa C. Moore, along with Atlanta contributor Lynwoodt Jenkins, will read and sign at Charis Books & More, 1189 Euclid Ave. NE, Atlanta, GA 30307. 404-524-0304. Please come out and support--and buy a book!
Finally, check out this wonderful interview of Ernest Hardy on Steven G. Fullwood's site, and in late-breaking news, this fantastic Blood Beats: Vol. 1 review, written by Mark Anthony Neal. Enjoy, keep reading your new RedBone Press books, and tell us what you think about 'em. More news coming soon!
